B1 Preliminary: Speaking Part 2

In Part 2, In this task, candidates are individually instructed by the interlocutor and take turns speaking for approximately one minute each. Each candidate is provided with a color photograph depicting everyday situations relevant to their age group. The task involves describing the contents of the photograph, focusing on people, activities, and details like colors, clothing, time of day, and weather.
The objective is to keep the descriptions simple, refrain from speculating on context or broader issues, and showcase a diverse vocabulary range. Candidates are encouraged to imagine explaining the photograph to someone who cannot see it and can use simple connectives to organize their language. Additionally, they can employ paraphrasing or other strategies when faced with unfamiliar vocabulary. Overall, the task assesses their ability to describe visual details effectively within the given time frame.

Sample Response Photograp 3-A1 Version 1 Alright, so in this picture, right in the middle, there’s a foosball table. It’s red, and it looks like it’s being used for a game right now. Around the table, there are six kids. They all seem super happy and excited, probably because the game is heating up. The two kids on this side are really pumped, with their hands up in the air like they just scored a goal. One of them, a boy, is wearing a light blue shirt, and the other, a girl, has a white shirt with some kind of pattern on it. Both are wearing dark pants or jeans. On the other side of the foosball table, there’s another girl and a boy. They’re cheering too. The girl is in a white blouse, and she’s got her hair in braids. The boy’s got a purple shirt on. Behind the students, there’s a bright and cheerful room with some artworks on the wall and a bulletin board with stuff pinned to it. It looks like a school or some place where kids hang out after class. Everyone’s just having a great time, playing and laughing together. It’s a really fun and lively scene. Sample Response Photograp 3-A1 Version 2 In this photo we’ve got a bright room and in the middle, there’s a red table with little soccer players on sticks. It’s a game where you spin the sticks to kick a ball. There are four kids around the table. They look super happy, like they’re having a lot of fun. Two girls are throwing their hands up, maybe because they scored a goal. One girl’s got long, wavy hair, and she’s wearing a dark dress. The other girl has braids and a white shirt. The two kids across the table are cheering too. There’s a boy in a light purple shirt and another girl in a white shirt. Behind them, the room’s got some pictures and things on the walls. It’s probably a place at school for kids to play when they’re not in class. They’re all standing, playing this table soccer game, and by the looks of it, everyone’s having a really good time. ⏩ (Examiner’s instructions): “Candidate B, it’s your turn. Here is your photograph. Sample Response Photograp 3-B1 Version 1 In the middle of the photograph, there’s a man standing at the kitchen sink. He’s wearing a dark blue sweater and is busy washing dishes. There’s a little boy next to him, who’s helping out. He looks like he’s holding a dish brush and is really focused on what he’s doing. The boy’s wearing a dark shirt, too. There’s also a little girl on the other side of the man. She’s holding a cup and seems to be washing it or maybe she’s about to hand it to the man to wash. She’s got light-colored hair and a grey shirt on. The kitchen looks homey and lived-in. There are plants by the window, and the counter’s got blue and white patterned dishes that the family’s washing. You can see more kitchen stuff in the background, like a fridge with lots of magnets and notes, which makes the place feel really cozy and real, like they’ve just had a meal and are cleaning up together. They all seem to be working together and doing their part. It’s a sweet moment, showing family teamwork. Sample Response Photograp 3-B1 Version 2 In this picture, there’s a kitchen with a man and two kids. The man is at the sink with lots of bubbles, and he’s cleaning a plate. He’s got on a blue sweater and looks like he’s showing the little boy how to wash dishes. The boy is holding a green brush and seems to be helping. He’s wearing a dark top. Next to the man, there’s a little girl who’s holding a mug. Her hair is blonde, and she’s wearing a light shirt. She’s helping too, or maybe waiting for her turn to wash something. Around them in the kitchen, there are some pots and a tea kettle. The counter has some pretty dishes with blue patterns. Behind them, you can see a fridge with lots of stuff on it, like pictures and notes. It looks like the whole family is cleaning up after eating. They seem happy and busy.
